Stump Grinding in McAllen
The tree came down; the stump stayed. Now it's a mowing obstacle, a termite condo, and the reason you can't plant that replacement palm where the old queen stood. Stump grinding is the cheap, fast fix — most Valley stumps are gone in under an hour.
Why Grind Instead of Remove or Ignore
- Grinding beats full stump removal. Pulling a stump with an excavator tears up irrigation lines, sprinkler heads, and the St. Augustine in a ten-foot radius. Grinding chews the stump in place, 6–12 inches below grade, and leaves the surrounding yard intact — the right call for nearly every residential lot in McAllen.
- Ignoring it costs more. Palm and hardwood stumps host subterranean termites (a real Valley problem), harbor fungal rots, and send up sucker growth that steals water from what you actually planted. A $150 grind today beats a $600 re-clear in three years.
- You're planning something. New palm, new patio, sod replacement, fence line — all of them want a clean grade. We grind to your plan: standard 6-inch depth for sod, 12-inch for replanting.
Palm Stumps vs. Hardwood Stumps
They grind differently. Palm stumps are fibrous and wet — they shred rather than chip, and the grinder has to work the whole root ball collar. Hardwood stumps (ebony, anacua, mesquite, ash) are dense; ebony and mesquite will dull a bad blade in minutes, which is the main reason cheap grinders give up halfway and you get a shallow dish instead of a real grind. We run commercial rigs with carbide teeth and grind until it's actually done — and for palms, we chase the visible root crown so the ground doesn't settle into a donut after the first rain.
What's Included
- Grind to 6–12 inches below grade (your choice, discussed on-site)
- Root-collar chase on palms; surface root grinding where they're heaving the walkway
- All grindings raked back into the depression (or hauled, your call — haul-away is a small add-on)
- Rake, blow, and tidy: we leave the area ready for topsoil and sod
One honest note: we don't chase taproots two feet down — nobody does at residential prices, and you don't need it for sod or replanting. If a contractor promises "complete root removal," ask what they mean by complete.
